Solar farms

Scroll verder
To meet the growing demand for electricity, Storm also aims to invest in solar energy. Through our agrisolar projects, we can combine the production of solar power with agricultural activities, without compromising the fertility of the land. As a result, we get stable energy supplies and a biodiverse landscape. A total win-win bringing us yet another step closer to a climate-neutral society.

What is agrisolar?

Agrisolar is an innovative way of combining solar energy production with agricultural activities. Aside from creating sustainable energy, the soil remains available for specific uses - as grassland, for example, or for growing short crops or promoting biodiversity and soil restoration. By integrating solar energy into agricultural areas, we can generate renewable energy while we support the local agricultural economy and improve soil health and biodiversity in one fell swoop.

A sustainable and efficient solution

Our solar farms provide clean, local and low-cost energy, enrich the landscape and provide additional streams of income for farmers. This is how agrisolar offers a sustainable and efficient solution to the growing demand in affordable energy in Belgium. In collaboration with BASF Antwerp and solar energy expert Solora, we are combining our knowledge, expertise and resources to make the rollout of large-scale solar farms in Belgium a reality in the short term.

Did you know that …

Agrisolar starts from the idea that solar parks can exist in harmony with nature and agriculture. The most appropriate application for our solar parks is chosen based on local conditions and in consultation with the agricultural farmer who remains the processor and/or owner of the land. Depending on the situation, this may mean combining solar panels with grassland, growing small crops, encouraging biodiversity, or a mix of these possibilities.

Biofuel is made from plants such as rapeseed or corn. These crops must first be grown, harvested and processed. Agrisolar solar farms convert sunlight directly into electricity, requiring much less space and time to produce renewable energy. Moreover, through dual land use, the land remains available for specific uses such as grassland, growing low crops or biodiversity and soil restoration, which is not the case with energy crops.

Solar and wind power together represent the most cost-effective way to generate electricity. They complement each other perfectly: while solar energy peaks on bright summer days, wind energy yields more especially in autumn and winter. Combining the two creates a more stable and reliable energy supply all year round.

An average family with solar panels has an installation of about 3.5 kWp. In comparison, 1 hectare of agrisolar - about 1.5 soccer fields - has a capacity of 1,000 kWp. So that is equivalent to about 285 homes with solar panels.

Thanks to the high efficiency of solar energy, only a small area of agricultural land is needed to significantly increase capacity. This allows us to choose locations carefully, taking into account the farmer's possible agricultural applications and harmonious integration into the landscape.

1 hectare of agrisolar - about 1.5 soccer fields - has a capacity of 1,000 kWp and generates about 1,000 MWh annually in Belgium. That's enough to power about 285 average families.
