Minister Zuhal Demir opened the Pelt wind farm site on Global Wind Day!

15/6/20

VIPs on our Pelt wind farm site today. Flemish Minister for Environment, Zuhal Demir, officially opened the site of the Storm wind farm in Pelt, which will consist of three wind turbines having an electricity capacity ranging between 4.0 and 4.5 MW, a rotor diameter of 145m and a tip height of 170m. This is the first time that wind turbines of such dimensions will be constructed in Flanders.

Two of the three turbines will be constructed on the sites of global multi-metals business, Nyrstar, and of neighbouring company, Velbo. A substantial part of the green energy will be taken to the high-voltage network via the Nyrstar electricity network.

It will be the first time that wind turbines in Flanders will have been constructed so near a military aviation radar: the Kleine-Brogel radar system is located approximately 9 kilometres from the wind farm. “We explicitly thank the Belgian Army for the flexibility shown in this regard,” says Storm’s project manager, Dries Van Hooydonk. “This wind farm proves that it is perfectly possible for aviation safety and wind energy to go hand in hand. We are also extremely happy that we have been able to maximise the energy production on this complex location by using the largest rotors in Flanders, namely 145m in diameter.”

The wind farm in Pelt will generate enough green energy to annually provide approximately 8,000 families with electricity. At the moment, the cable work is being installed on the wind farms. The turbines as such are scheduled to be constructed in the spring of 2021. They are to be commissioned in the summer of 2021.

At the end of 2019, inhabitants of the community of Pelt and the city of Lommel were given the opportunity of sharing in the profits of the wind turbines via the Storm CV cooperative. A total of 129 locals joined the group of the wind farm investors.
